Why a Specialist Who Says 'Not Us' Can Be More Valuable Than a Generalist Who Says 'Anything'

Here's the opinion I've landed on after all of it: I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. In fact, the word "no" from an expert is often more valuable than "yes" from a company that claims it can do everything.
That might sound like a strange thing for someone in the equipment business to say, because sales culture rewards "yes." But after a 36-hour emergency at an aggregate plant last March, I stopped trusting the companies that never turned down a job.
The generalist's "yes" is not an answer
The call came in on a Thursday afternoon. A sand screw in Pennsylvania had packed up with clay fines, and the owner needed a replacement shaft before Saturday night. Normal turnaround for that part was five days. We had maybe 40 hours. One of the vendors I tried said all the right things: "No problem, we can match it, overnight, guaranteed."
Then I asked about the drive taper. Silence. Then I asked if they had handled a fine-material washer before. The answer was a version of "we handle everything." That's not an answer. That's a script.
We paid an extra $800 in rush freight for that "yes." The part didn't fit. The plant manager's face—that sour puss—said it all. We'd just made a textbook mistake.
Everyone had warned me to check the drawings before approving. I didn't listen. I wanted the easy yes. It cost us the whole night, plus the rush fee, plus another round of freight. A lesson learned the hard way.
The specialist's "no" is a data point

The specialist has a story for those. The generalist has a brochure.
Seeing that contrast side by side made me realize focus isn't a limitation. It's a containment of risk. When a specialist says "this isn't our strength—here's who does it better," they're showing you the same rigor they use on their own machines. That's exactly the kind of thinking you need when an emergency is on the line.
It's tempting to think you should always get three quotes and pick the lowest bid. But the always-get-three-quotes advice ignores the transaction cost of vetting someone who's never touched your machine. If you're in a rush, the best quote is often the one that knows what you don't know.
But doesn't a specialist cost more?
When people hear this story, they often ask: "Didn't you pay more for the specialist?"
Not really. The first vendor charged a premium for speed. Then we paid again for freight, installation stoppage, and the time spent correcting a bad fit. The specialist's answer cost us a normal machine-shop rate—plus a genuine sense of calm, which doesn't show up on an invoice but should.
The question isn't "who's the cheapest?" The question is "what's the cost of being wrong when the plant is down?" If the screw sits idle, every hour of lost production is an expense that dwarfs the difference between a generalist and a specialist.
According to USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries (2025), construction sand and gravel is one of the highest-volume mined commodities in the country. When a screw stops, that volume doesn't wait. Downtime has a price, and it's usually bigger than the part.
Another objection: "Wouldn't it be simpler to have one vendor for everything?" Simple, yes. Reliable, no. A one-stop shop that hides the parts it can't handle makes you less safe, not less busy. I'd rather know exactly where the line is before I step over it.
Bottom line
I don't want a partner who says "yes" to everything. I want one who says, "Here's the best way to fix it, even if it isn't through us."
The material will still turn into peanut butter when the clay content spikes. Deadlines will still move. Someone will always ask for the impossible. That's when the difference becomes obvious: the generalist tells you what you want to hear, and the specialist tells you what you need to know.
McLanahan may not make every part that ever wore out. But the company knows exactly what it's good at, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. In an industry where a broken promise can shut down a plant, that honesty is the fastest part I've ever ordered.
Simple. Done.
