What Is Breakfast in a Processing Plant? A 6-Step McLanahan Equipment Buying Checklist
Five years ago, I took over purchasing for a 90-person aggregate company. I manage roughly $1.2M in annual spend across 14 vendors—parts, wear items, and the occasional major piece of processing equipment. I've made plenty of mistakes. I've also landed on a process that works.

1. Define the problem before you define the machine

If you say "I have 120 TPH of sand with 8% clay and I need to get it down to 2%," you'll get a recommendation. 2. Check your site physics: power, footprint, weight, tires
I once ordered a unit without checking the existing motor starter. It fit the process perfectly, and the electrical system hated it. In my first year, I made the classic spec error: assumed "standard" meant the same thing to every vendor. Cost me a $600 change order.
Before you call, measure available motor horsepower, voltage, footprint, maintenance clearance, and—if the unit is portable—tire size and weight per axle. Tires sound like a small detail until you need a permit for a state road. (Should mention: road permits can delay a portable plant by weeks. Know your axle weights.)
3. Verify who you're talking to
Buyers sometimes search for "Mary McLanahan" or "linked in michael mclanahan" to try to get a direct contact. That can work, but for a formal quote, use the official sales channel. Why? The official channel gets your specs into the engineering queue. A LinkedIn message might get you a nice conversation and a delay. Trust me on this one.
Oh, and if you already have a service rep, call them first.
4. Ask for references you can actually call
Spec sheets don't tell you what it's like to change a filter cloth at 2 a.m. Ask for three installations that are similar to yours, with contact names. If a rep says "Thomas at the Ohio quarry can tell you," get the full site name, the machine model, and the install date. Then call.
Ask about wear parts lead time. That's the quiet killer. We skipped this once. The numbers said go with the less expensive filter press. My gut said the vendor's responsiveness was a warning. Went with the numbers. The press worked, but every high-pressure hose failure took six weeks to fix. A spreadsheet doesn't include downtime.
5. Estimate total cost, not purchase price
The purchase price is one line. Add wear parts, maintenance hours, freight, and potential downtime. For a sand screw, that's shoes and wear liners. For a filter press, filter cloths. For a feeder breaker, picks and tooth segments.
Efficiency is a competitive advantage. A machine that costs 5% more but saves three maintenance days a year pays for itself. Ask the manufacturer for a recommended spare parts list and an hourly maintenance estimate before you sign. It took me a few years and a lot of spreadsheets to understand that vendor relationships matter more than vendor capabilities—but the reverse is also true: even a good relationship won't save you from bad total-cost math.
6. Ask the breakfast question
Here's the one people ignore: what happens right before your equipment? "Breakfast" isn't official industry jargon, but think about it. Breakfast is the first meal of the day. The first thing your plant eats is the feed entering the first unit. If you're buying a feeder breaker or a sand screw, the feed end is your breakfast station. If the feed surge is inconsistent, everything downstream pays for it.
Map the feed system before you order: hopper size, belt speed, scalping screen, magnet, bypass. Ask the OEM: "What feed conditions is this equipment rated for?" The most expensive machine in the world won't fix a poor breakfast.
I didn't understand this at first. I only believed it after ignoring it and watching a brand-new unit jam three times in one week because the previous conveyor was too short. The manufacturer's recommendation was correct. I hadn't verified the feed end.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't buy on the first quote. Get at least two, but make sure the specs are identical. A cheaper quote for a lower-capacity machine isn't cheaper.
- Take photos of the existing equipment, including nameplates and serial numbers. Send them with the RFQ. It saves an engineering visit.
- Ask for the current lead time, not the brochure lead time. (Mental note: every OEM has seasonal backlog.)
- Don't skip step 6. The "breakfast" question—your feed entry point—is the reason many installations underperform.
