Why Compare a New McLanahan Sand Screw to a Rebuilt Washer?

I manage buying for an aggregate operation. From 2019 through January 2025, I logged every major equipment quote, work order, and downtime event in our cost tracking system. The lesson I keep coming back to: a screw washer purchase is not a price decision. It is a risk decision.

This article compares two paths: a new McLanahan fine material screw washer and a rebuilt unit from an independent equipment vendor. I'm not going to tell you one path is universally correct. I'm going to show you the comparison I actually use, especially the parts that don't show up on the first page of a quote.

The Comparison Framework

It's tempting to compare sand screws by length, diameter, and price. That oversimplified version is where decisions go wrong. A rebuilt washer can measure the same and still behave differently because of the gearbox, flight thickness, shaft condition, or the history hidden under fresh paint.

So I compare five things:

  • What is actually included in the capital quote.
  • Whether the unit was selected around my feed material or just around a generic spec.
  • Whether the vendor will put a delivery date in writing.
  • Which parts wear fastest and how long they take to replace.
  • What one unplanned shutdown week costs during my busy season.

That last question decides more deals than any other, and it almost never appears in a proposal.

Dimension 1: First Price Is Not First Cost

In the spring of 2023, we asked for quotes on a 36-inch by 25-foot fine material screw washer. McLanahan quoted a new screw washer. An independent rebuilder quoted a machine with the same diameter and length. The rebuilder's number was about $60,000 lower. If I had approved that quote on the first page, I would have missed half the comparison.

After we matched the scope, the price gap narrowed. The rebuilder's quote did not include a few wear items I wanted as spares, and it was based on a used gearbox that would need inspection before we could rely on it. None of that was hidden with bad intent. It just reflected a different level of certainty.

The OEM quote was more complete and more conservative. There is no reason to apologize for that. Compare like-for-like before you compare price.

Dimension 2: Engineering Fit and Feed Material

Most of the time, when a manufacturer sells a screw washer for more money, it's not because the steel is magic. It's because the seller is taking responsibility for an application. When I order new equipment, the design team asks for material gradation, water volume, and fines content. When I buy a rebuild, I have to know those numbers myself. If I don't, I'm guessing.

For the 2023 decision, the McLanahan quotation came back with a drive rating larger than the rebuilder's. Not because the manufacturer wanted a more expensive sale; because our feed has more clay and seasonal moisture than typical. The extra torque was a form of insurance. That added cost, but it also added an operating margin I was about to ignore.

Take this with a grain of salt, but in our operation, the difference between a good rebuild and a bad one rarely shows up in the first month. It shows up later, when the gearbox gets inspected or the screw speed is pushed harder than the old design expected. If you are buying a rebuild, you need to do the engineering diligence yourself.

Dimension 3: Delivery Date Certainty

Here is where my purchasing philosophy sounds like a contradiction: the most price-sensitive person in the room will still pay for a firm date. That is not buying comfort. That is buying down risk.

One decision that stuck with me happened in March of 2024. We needed a replacement gearbox and had two options. Option A was about $3,000 more but came with a written delivery date and a late penalty. Option B was cheaper and promised the same delivery window verbally. I chose A. The plant was scheduled to run eighteen hours a day starting in April, and the cost of being down for one week was far above the $3,000 difference. Option B would probably have made it. Probably was not good enough.

The same logic applies to the sand screw decision. If a rebuilder can only say that the unit should be ready sometime in the spring, that is not a schedule. That is a hope. When a busy season has a hard start date, the vendor who can make a date a written commitment is offering something valuable, even if the price is higher.

Dimension 4: Wear Parts and the In-House Maintenance Reality

Sand screws wear. Flight shoes, bearing seals, gearbox components, and drive parts all end up in the maintenance budget eventually. Over a six- or seven-year period, wear parts and labor can exceed the first capital difference between a new unit and a rebuild.

I have bought aftermarket wear parts before. Some were fine. One replacement set wore out much faster than the original, which meant the lower invoice price was actually a higher cost per operating hour. Since then, I track cost per hour instead of invoice total when I test a non-OEM part.

Please don't read that as an argument to buy every small part from the original manufacturer. Bearings, fasteners, and standard motors can often be sourced locally with good results. But for fast-wearing, load-sensitive components, I now look at the data from our own maintenance logs first and the part price second.

Having a strong in-house maintenance crew changes the picture. If your people can rebuild drives, replace flight segments, and inspect gearboxes without vendor support, a rebuilt washer can be low-risk. If your crew relies on the supplier's field service team, then the service network and parts availability matter as much as the machine specification.

What I Would Choose Now

If you are replacing a failed machine just before your busy season, pay for certainty. The premium is easier to understand when you write the expected cost of a late start next to the quote. If you are adding capacity months ahead, or if your maintenance team can fully inspect a rebuild, do not assume the OEM option is always required.

Price is what you pay at signing. Total cost is what ends up in your cost tracking system after the season ends.

I have approved rebuilt equipment for non-critical duty. I have also approved a new McLanahan screw washer when downtime risk was high. I am not loyal to a logo. I am loyal to the line in my records that tells me whether one more cheap purchase turned into one more expensive repair. If the schedule is tight and the failure is critical, the vendor who makes certainty a written commitment is the one I choose.
