McLanahan Equipment: What We Build, What We Don't, and How We Prove It

Why Specialization Beats "We Do Everything"

Procurement teams face a constant pull toward supplier consolidation. Give the contract to one vendor, simplify the paperwork, reduce the number of invoice lines. I understand that logic. But in heavy processing equipment, a generalist will overpromise on things they've never built.

I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who says yes to every RFQ line and quietly brokers out the rest. The vendor who says "this isn't our strength — here's who does it better" earns trust for everything they don't hand off. That's the model we run. We're not the right answer for every component on a mine site, and we'd rather be excellent on our core lines than mediocre at everything else.

People think a supplier admitting a limitation looks weak. Actually, it's the opposite — it signals they care about the outcome more than the order. That distinction matters a ton when your sand screw is down at 2 AM and the answer determines whether you restart by morning.

What I Check Before Your Equipment Ships

Every order passes through the same framework: contract review against the current engineering drawings, material certificates, run-in test results, and final inspection sign-off. In Q1 2024 alone, I flagged 18 discrepancies across 41 packages. Common issues included:

  • Motor power mismatches. Contract says 75 kW; the engineering spec shows 55 kW. Unless caught and corrected, the machine is underpowered from day one.
  • Liner material substitutions. Approved spec is 1/2-inch AR plate with a defined Brinell hardness range. Someone planned a 7/16-inch "equivalent." Undersized liners wear through in one season — a $200,000 redo, plus a lost customer. I've lived that with another vendor. It's not a mistake you make twice.
  • Incomplete test documentation. No run-in record for a gearbox means no verified function at all. Our standard run-in is 2 to 4 hours of no-load operation, with bearing temperatures and vibration logged hourly. You get that sheet in your manual. If a supplier can't produce a test record, they haven't tested it.

On welding, we verify main-frame fabrication against AWS D1.1 structural welding requirements. Liner materials are certified against the specified AR steel grade with the mill test certificate included in the documentation package. For export orders to North America, we include a USMCA certificate of origin where applicable — ask for it when you request your quote so your customs broker has everything ready.

Here's a practical suggestion: your contract should include an inspection point at the factory. Invite your own inspector to witness the run-in and compare the serial plate against the packing list. If the manufacturer hesitates or proposes only a virtual tour, that's a signal. Genuine manufacturers publish their quality plan and welcome inspection — it's how we sleep at night.

Where We Draw the Line

One more honest note. McLanahan isn't your best partner for everything, and here's how I think about it:

  • Long overland conveyor systems — a 5-mile conveyor with intermediate drives and complex route engineering is a distinct discipline. We handle transfer points and site conveyors, not that.
  • Drilling and blasting — outside our wheelhouse entirely. You want a drilling contractor.
  • Giant primary gyratory installations at extreme throughput — other manufacturers specialize there; let them.

Does saying that cost us revenue? Rarely. It makes the yeses meaningful. In 190 years of building sand screws and feeder breakers, we've learned to be excellent in a specific lane. And "no" is not the same as a deficit. It's a boundary you can trust.

If you need a sand screw, a feeder breaker, or a filter press, talk to us.
