How to Identify Your McLanahan Sand Screw (Before You Waste $3,000 on the Wrong Part)

You glance at the machine, the silhouette looks right, and you're about to order a part you're "pretty sure" fits a McLanahan. If you've ever tried to identify a hawk—say, a Cooper's vs. a sharp-shinned—you know where this is heading. Details matter. Get one wrong, and you're not just looking at the wrong bird. You're ordering the wrong part.

Good designs get copied

That long history means a lot of genuine McLanahan machines working in the field—plus a lot of lookalikes from other manufacturers that resemble ours from across the plant. Machines get modified

Gearboxes get swapped. Bearings get replaced with whatever was in stock. Flighting gets rebuilt to non-standard dimensions.   1. Find the serial plate. On most McLanahan sand screws, it's fastened to the main frame near the feed end. Scrape away the paint and grime. A clear photo of that plate answers most of our questions.
  2. Measure the shaft diameter and tub length. These two numbers line you up with the correct model range faster than any visual guess.
  3. Photograph the gearbox and drive assembly. The gearbox shape and reduction ratio are reliable identifiers. Send the photos to our service team before ordering, and we'll confirm the model.
  4. Look for casting marks. Many older McLanahan units have the name cast into the gearbox housing or the lower tub. It's subtle—which is exactly why it survives when paint and serial plates don't.

To be fair, these machines do look similar from a distance, and I get why people mix them up. The ten minutes you spend identifying your equipment is the cheapest production insurance you'll buy this year.
